In August, Ted Collins identified and verified the first infestation of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in the Town of Pittsford. The detection signals the eastern most infestation in the Greater Rochester area and is located about 2 miles outside the Village of Pittsford.
The insect has traveled a great distance across the state in the last few years – here is the most recent map showing all the locations where the insect has been detected. The most recent detections outside Monroe County include one area in Dewitt (outside Syracuse) and in the Montezuma area (north of Cayuga Lake).
What now? Develop a plan to manage your trees! That plan can involve treatment, removal, fertilization, pruning, and sometimes it can mean taking no action at all. But if you have an Ash Tree, it is imperative that you plan to deal with EAB.
